Being awarded this scholarship is a great honor and a very humble turning point in my academic career.  This award is more than just a financial resource for me as a student who has had many financial and personal setbacks; it serves as an important reminder that my efforts, perseverance, and aspirations are valued and encouraged.  It indicates that someone has faith in my future, which strengthens my resolve to overcome challenges and keep aiming for greatness.

I’m now working on a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and a focus in Cellular and Molecular Biology.  My goal is to work as a doctor, a profession that is based on advocacy, service, and healing.  I was interested in medicine from an early age because I saw it as a means of helping underprivileged communities like my own, in addition to being a science.  This scholarship eases the financial burden of my education and allows me to focus entirely on my coursework, volunteer work, and pre-medical activities without having to worry about money all the time.

I take an active position in leadership and service organizations on campus outside of the classroom.  In addition to being active with organizations like MAPS and The Collegiate 100, I am the Treasurer of the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Society.  My dedication to these organizations is a reflection of my conviction that being a leader is about more than simply having a title; it’s about being there, showing up, and assisting others in rising to their feet.  With the help of this scholarship, I am able to continue working in these capacities while being ready for the demands and accountability of a career in medicine.

There is personal significance to this opportunity as well.  Your interest in me speaks volumes, as I was once told I wouldn’t amount to anything due to my speech impediment.  It serves as a reminder that every step I take counts and that my narrative, with all of its hardships and victories, is valuable.  My desire to become a doctor who listens intently, leads with empathy, and never forgets his roots is stronger than ever.
